Review of the Dyson DC14 Low Reach cont.
Retail Price: $449
There is no doubt that this vacuum has amazing suction power. Like the previous model, the DC14 Low Reach's cyclone system delivered enough power to suck up nearly all the dust and debris we could throw at it. In fact, we think it even outperformed the DC07, which is no small accomplishment.
The vacuum did very well on our hardwood floors, leaving almost no pet hair or other debris behind. The standard wand tool was very useful in cleaning out tight corners and edges. Also, it was nice to be able to turn off the brush using a foot operated control (a feature found in the DC07 as well). Although the vacuum will still try to suck up your area rugs, this will at least keep the brush from clawing at your rug fringes and hardwood floor finish.
So how low can the Low Reach reach? That is perhaps the question of most interest to those looking to buy this particular dyson. Overall, the vacuum did okay on the low reach tests. The base unit couldn't quite get low enough to reach under a low-sitting sofa. We needed to use the floor tool in order to reach into this area. And this too presented a slight problem, as the attachment has a small lump that makes it difficult to get in tight spaces. As you may have read, this same design flaw is found on the DC07. We were a little disappointed that this had not been improved, but it's important to point out that the Low Reach models can in fact go lower than any other upright dyson currently offers. Whether this is low enough is largely up to the furniture you have and the job you need to do.
The DC14 Low Reach Filter
We tested the DC14 Low Reach vacuum on several occasions over a period of time, and construction of the vacuum is quite solid. Although the plastic exterior may appear easily breakable, we have found it to be both sturdy and durable. Like any vacuum, you can expect to accumulate scratches, but with the dyson there's very little risk of any major damage from regular usage.
In nearly every way, the DC14 Low Reach vacuum is identical to its DC14 sister, the All Floors model. The major difference in the two is the low reach floor tool, which allows you to vacuum under tables, chairs, beds, and whatever else you can think of. The only model-specific design flaw you may want to consider is the hump that impedes some movement under low-sitting furniture, such as sofas. In many cases, however, the floor tool is long enough to reach the length (or most of the length) of your piece of furniture.
Vacuum bags are not only expensive and messy they also clog quickly and cause the vacuum to lose suction. The Dyson low-reach bagless upright vacuum eliminates these problems by relying on a reusable, easy-to-empty bin to catch the dirt. A low-reach floor tool simplifies the task of cleaning under the couch, and the long-reach wand is great for cleaning curtains and blinds, too. Vacuum features a cleaning range of 56' and lifetime HEPA filter to eliminate airborne dust and other allergens.
