Review of the Dyson DC14 Full Kit

Retail Price: $449

The Dyson DC14 Full Kit is another one of dysons more obscure vacuum models. It is only available through costco, and is often out of stock (will vary from store to store). Quite honestly, it was difficult to get our hands on this particular vacuum, which doesn't seem to be as popular as some of the other vacuums in the DC14 series. The reason for this is probably because the DC14 Full Kit is a bit misleading. The name implies that the vacuum comes with several addition "add-on" tools, when infact it only has one more than the barebones All Floor model: the mini turbine head. This too is not a very exclusive tool, as four other DC14 have one as well. It is difficult for us to see why the mini turbine head should fetch an additional $50.

As with all dyson models, the DC14 Full Kit must be assembled out of the box. As we've pointed out before, the assembly process does take some work and concentration, but it easy enough to pull off, especially if you contact the reasonably helpful dyson support line. We give only moderate marks to the assembly guide, although it has improved from the DC07 version.

Fully constructed, the DC14 Full Kit looks much like all the other DC14 dyson vacuums. This is largely a good thing, as the dyson DC14 series has a very modern and stylish base. The plastic exterior, though it may look weak, is actually quite strong and durable. The one thing we didn't care for much on this model was the color scheme. As you can see from the picture, the vacuum is covered in a mix of white, gray, and yellow-brown, which is simply not as attractive as some of the other color combinations available.

The Dyson DC14 Full Kit is approximately the same size as most other dyson vacuums at 44.86" tall, 14.0" wide, and 13.38" from front to back. The base weight of the vacuum is slightly less than DC07 models at 18.5 pounds. This would be considered a little heavy if the vacuum didn't maneuver so well. Like other dysons (and most standard vacuums), the vacuum is driven by a 12-amp motor.

It is not the number of amps, however, that determines how powerful this particular vacuum is. Like all dyson vacuums, the secret to its outstanding suction power lies in the patented dyson Cyclone air path design.

A specially designed chamber with eight separate compartments that create 150,000 g of centrifugal force. All of the dirt and dust you have just vacuumed up gets thrown out of the air and towards the sides of the compartments, where they end up in the vacuum's 0.7-gallon collection canister. Because the air path remains unobstructed by the incoming debris, the vacuum is able to maintain 250 air watts of powerful, consistent suction. In the end, this translates into more undesirable material being lifted out of your carpet and into the vacuum canister.

For those who suffer from in-door allergies, you will be pleased to know that the DC14 Drive also comes with a 412 square inch HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is specifically designed to filter out microscopic particulates and allergens that the regular filtration system may miss. The filter is made to be durable, and should last as long as the vacuum itself.

In spite of it's unpopularity, the dyson DC14 Full Kit did just as well on all our tests as the previous DC14 vacuums. The mini turbine head is one of the few really useful add-on tools. Originally developed for the Animal model, the turbine head can removed pet hair from upholstery and carpeting like nothing else available. It's true you can get this tool on several others models, but we do believe its an important one to have. In fact, if you are thinking about getting the Animal, but would rather have your $60 or $70 than the low reach floor tool, this is the vacuum for you.
