Review of the Dyson DC14 Animal cont.
Retail Price: $549
The DC14 Animal was tested on three surfaces: carpeting, hardwood flooring, and sofa upholstery. The carpet and hard flooring tests went as well as expected. All dyson DC14 vacuums perform nearly equally as well at this task. The extra power of the DC14, however, is realyl quite apparent when you put the DC07 Animal and DC14 Animal side by side. Although the DC07 version does a very good job, the DC14 can clearly outperform its older counterpart and nearly every task. On the previous page you can see the amount of dust collected in the canister after just a very brief run-through over some carpeting.
We also used the carpet care kit, which came with the vacuum. It did indeed help lift some old and very stubborn stains and blemishes off of the biege carpeting. It couldn't lift out everything (including a dab of oil paint), but it did surprisingly well. The carpet hasn't looked this new since it was actually new.
On the sofa upholstery, the mini turbine head went to work and easily removed pet hair that was nearly impossible to remove any other way. It's really amazing how much pet hair can actually accumulate on a piece of furniture - you will notice this when you inspect your dust canister. The mini turbine head really is just as good (or better) than the turbo tool used on the DC07 Animal.
The DC14 Animal Mini Turbine Head
The carpet care kit complements the turbo tool. The Zorb powder does a pretty good job at absorbing dirt so that it is picked up more easily, while the Dysolv spray easily facilitated the removal of annoying grease, food and soil spots.
Everyone should be pleased to know that the DC14 Animal also comes with the low reach floor tool found on the DC14 low reach model. This makes it much easier to clean under those hard to reach furniture items, such as beds and couches.
The 17-foot hose with a reversible, extension-wand handle (found all all dyson vacuum models) is great to have. Yet, this too requires some muscle to work with, as the elasticity of the cord (at least at first) is quite powerful. Finally, emptying the vacuum wasn't a problem at all; you simply take out the dust canister and dump the contents into the trash can. Be sure, however, to briefly inspect the area between the rubber seal and canister rim, as dust may get trapped there on occasion.
The DC14 Animal really is a dream come true for pet owners who are tired of unwanted pet hair clinging to carpeting and upholstery. The Animal, with its mini turbine head, low reach floor tool, and carpet cleaning kit, is nearly the perfect vacuum for cleaning up after your pet. It does cost a bit more than some of the other DC14 models, but you just might find that it's worth it. There's a good reason why this vacuum is so popular: it works and it has what you need.
