Review of the Dyson DC14 Animal

Retail Price: $549

With the DC14 Animal we've finally gotten back to a model that is also available as a DC07 version. The Animal has always been one of dysons best selling vacuums, and for good reason. As we found out with the DC07 Animal, it's a pet owners dream come true. It has a surprisingly rich assortment of tools and add-ons that help you clean like never before: mini turbine head, carpet care kit, and low reach floor tool. The mini turbine head is really the star of the show, as it is this device which is best suited for brushing up and removing unwanted pet hair.

The low reach floor tool, also available on several other DC14 models, is also very helpful. If you can't get under your furniture to remove pet hair, then you are leaving behind a good portion of the hair that's in your carpet.

Once we got the DC14 All Floors constructed, we were finally able to see in person how the design had been altered from the DC07. Overall, the core of the vacuum is more compact than the DC07 model. The clyclone chambers appear to be shorter, though it's difficult to tell from the exterior. Also, the dust canister was shorter, but wider, allowing it to hold approximately the same amount of debris. Despite changes in design, the dyson vacuum was just as attractive as ever.

We've mentioned this many times before, but putting together dyson vacuums is not a breeze. The instructions could have been much clearer. Thankfully, the phone support is both friendly and helpful, and should help you get through any tough spots should you encounter them. Once constructed, the DC14 Animal is an attractive vacuum with a largely purple and gray exterior. The outside is constructed of a durable plastic, which dyson claims is also used in the production of crash-test helmets.

The Dyson DC14 Full Kit is basically the same size as most other dyson vacuums at 44.86" tall, 14.0" wide, and 13.38" from front to back. The base weight of the vacuum is slightly less than DC07 models at 18.5 pounds. This would be considered a little heavy if the vacuum didn't maneuver so well. Like other dysons (and most standard vacuums), the vacuum is driven by a 12-amp motor.

It is not the number of amps, however, that determines how powerful this particular vacuum is. Like all dyson vacuums, the secret to its outstanding suction power lies in the patented dyson Cyclone air path design.

A specially designed chamber with eight separate compartments that create 150,000 g of centrifugal force. All of the dirt and dust you have just vacuumed up gets thrown out of the air and towards the sides of the compartments, where they end up in the vacuum's 0.7-gallon collection canister. Because the air path remains unobstructed by the incoming debris, the vacuum is able to maintain 250 air watts of powerful, consistent suction. In the end, this translates into more undesirable material being lifted out of your carpet and into the vacuum canister.

For those who suffer from in-door allergies, you will be pleased to know that the DC14 Animal also comes with a 412 square inch HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is specifically designed to filter out microscopic particulates and allergens that the regular filtration system may miss. The filter is made to be durable, and should last as long as the vacuum itself.
