Review of the Dyson DC14 All Floors
Retail Price: $429
The dyson DC14 All Floors model is the first of the second generation of dyson vacuum cleaners. What sets it apart from the DC07 is greater power and slight (yet significant) design changes. Just like the DC07 All Floors, the DC14 All Floors is specially designed to work as well on hard surfaces as it does on carpeting. Though we already tested and reviewed the DC07 All Floors, we went ahead and tested a DC14 All Floors model to make sure the performance was still as good (or perhaps better) than its predecessor.
Dyson vacuums are no different from most in that they must be assembled out of the box. This was not an easy task. The instruction manual left some questions, which were promptly answered by toll-free phone support. Be advised that the DC14 All Floors is commonly sold as a "barebones" package, leaving most add-on accessories to be purchased separately.
Once we got the DC14 All Floors constructed, we were finally able to see in person how the design had been altered from the DC07. Overall, the core of the vacuum is more compact than the DC07 model. The clyclone chambers appear to be shorter, though it's difficult to tell from the exterior. Also, the dust canister was shorter, but wider, allowing it to hold approximately the same amount of debris. Despite changes in design, the dyson vacuum was just as attractive as ever.
The Dyson DC14 All Floors model is a decent-sized vacuum at 44.86" tall, 14.0" wide, and 13.38" from front to back (making the unit slightly shorter than the DC07 model). The weight of the vacuum is approximately 19 pounds, though this will increase with the addition of add-on components. A fairly standard 12 amp motor powers the vacuum.
As with all dyson models, the secret to the vacuum's suction power lies in the patented dyson Cyclone air path design. A specially designed chamber with eight separate compartments that create 150,000 g of centrifugal force. This is enough power to remove particles as small as 0.1 micron (about the size of pollen)
All of the dirt and dust you have just vacuumed up gets thrown out of the air and towards the sides of the compartments, where they end up in the vacuum's 1-gallon collection canister. Because the air path remains unobstructed by the incoming debris, the vacuum is able to maintain 250 air watts of powerful, consistent suction. In the end, this translates into more undesirable material being lifted out of your carpet and into the vacuum canister.
For those who suffer from in-door allergies, you will be pleased to know that the DC14 All Floors also comes with a 412 square inch HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is specifically designed to filter out microscopic particulates and allergens that the regular filtration system may miss.
